‘Story, Country, Site’ is a survey of tapestries designed by First Nations artists and woven by the Australian Tapestry Workshop. These include commissions for public and private spaces, as well as works from the Embassy Tapestry Collection, an innovative program that places tapestries on loan to selected overseas Australian embassies.
Other artists represented through tapestry samples from the ATW Archive include Brook Andrew (Wiradjuri), Daisy Andrews (Walmajarri), Hayley Millar Baker (Gunditjmara), Kunmanara Carroll (Luritja/Pintupi/Pitjantjatjara), Naomi Hobson (Kaantju/Umpila), Ginger Riley Munduwalawala (Marra), and Pedro Wonaeamirri (Andranangoo), as well as a collaborative work ‘Dulka Warngiid’ by the Kaiadilt women of Bentick Island.
‘Story, Country, Site’ shows the depth of connection ATW weavers have had with First Nations artists over the last 48 years; from when the ATW first wove ‘The Winparrku Serpents’ by Kaapa Djambidjimba (Anmatjira) in 1978. By translating these important artworks into tapestry, ATW can share their stories of landscape, place and identity in large scale woven form.
