Open to artists worldwide, the ATW Artist in Residence program provides dedicated time and space for artists to work in a contemporary and dynamic studio setting in the heart of the ATW weaving floor amongst our weavers, sharing skills and knowledge.

Each artist from the 2023 program has selected work to show in the ATW’s annual Artist in Residence group exhibition. This may be something created during their residency or made afterwards in response to research and experimentation they undertook during this time. This exhibition provides the artists an opportunity to come together to celebrate their residency outcomes.

ATW hosts artists from diverse disciplines that speak to the handmade, artist led, textile medium of the workshop. Exposed to the daily comings and goings of a tapestry production studio, artists gain rare insights into the manufacture of this unique artform, and the highly skilled people behind the production.

For many artists the ATW residency is rare, dedicated studio time for making and experimentation – away from the pressures of work, family and life commitments. Resident artists have access to a dizzying array of yarn colours from our Dye Lab, use of our large tapestry looms and weaving equipment, and post-production waste including bobbin and warp ends.

Importantly, residents and weavers share skills as artists and as gardeners, cooks, and craftspeople more broadly. It is an opportunity to join the ATW community and the ever-growing alumnus of artists who have benefited from completing a residency at the ATW.

The 2024 exhibition features the work of Donna Blackall (Yorta Yorta), Jacky Cheng (WA), Kait James (Wadawurrung), Cara Johnson (VIC), Misako Nakahira (JPN), Joanne Nethercote (VIC), and Studio Brieditis & Evans (SWE)
