Emma Stenhouse (Ngarrindjeri), 2026 ATW Regional Artist in Residence

My eight-week residency at ATW was genuinely life-changing. Having the luxury of time and space to focus on my creative practice allowed me to experiment, learn new skills and really play without being focused on the outcome. I was able to explore botanical dyeing using Australian native plants, develop my skills in different weaving techniques and spend time learning from the talented weavers and dye technicians at ATW.

As a First Nations, regional artist, feeling culturally safe and supported was incredibly important to me. I was encouraged to stay true to my own ways of being, doing and creating, while also being given the opportunity to explore new approaches and make connections across the arts industry.

I came away with new skills, new ideas, new relationships and a much deeper understanding of where my practice could go. I am so grateful for the generosity of everyone at ATW and the opportunity to be immersed in such an inspiring creative environment.
