2027 Artist in Residence Program

Call for Applications

The Australian Tapestry Workshop’s annual residency program offers mid-career artists the chance to extend their practice through engagement with our resources. For over 20 years, artists in residence have immersed themselves in our vibrant studio, exchanging knowledge and skills with our tapestry weavers and dye technicians. Artists are invited to further engage with local communities during their residency through exhibition and public programming.

Please review the 2027 Artist in Residence Information Pack to confirm your eligibility before applying. The dates for each residency are fixed and are not negotiable.

There are five residencies available in 2027:

Hancock Fellowship – International Artists Residency | 16 August – 11 September 2027

This program is open only to mid-career textile artists and designers living and working outside Australia. To be eligible, you must not be living or working in Australia, including as a temporary resident. The Hancock Fellowship is generously supported by the Tapestry Foundation of Australia It includes:
• Return flights to Melbourne
• Four weeks accommodation between 16 August – 11 September 2027
• A solo exhibition in ATW ‘s main gallery, including: Artist exhibition fee of $1000, Supported freight and Installation costs

First People’s Residency | 1 February – 28 February 2027

• Open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists only
• $2500 stipend supported through the Irene Davies Residency Scholarship
• The artist is autonomously selected by a paid First Nations peer

Open Call Residency | 13 September – 9 October 2027

• Open to artists based in any Australian State or Territory
• Two Open Call Residency opportunities are available and run concurrently, the dates apply to both opportunities

Regional Residency | 8 November – 4 December 2027

• Open to artists who live and work in regional Australia
• $2500 stipend supported through the Irene Davies Residency Scholarship

All Residencies Include:

• A dedicated working space in the weaving studio
• Up to $100 AUD worth of ATW yarn and postproduction tapestry materials
• Up to 10 hours of specialist studio support which can be used over several days.
• Use of a range of textile construction equipment
• Access to ATW’s online tapestry weaving course
• Opportunity to show and sell artwork in one of our two street front galleries

Please note, ATW are happy to provide supporting documentation for those applying for external grant funding to undertake the residency.
