“Weaving for me, is not simply about a method of construction. It is a way of entering into a relationship. Each strand carries a memory - of place, of a season, of a touch. When I gather materials, I do so with care and reciprocity, acknowledging that what is taken must also be honoured. The act itself becomes a dialogue: between my hands and the fibres, between my body and Country.”
Emma Stenhouse is a proud Ngarrindjeri woman and a contemporary Indigenous artist on a path of self-discovery. She is deepening her connection with her family, exploring her heritage, and finding inspiration in her love for Country. Stenhouse captures her knowledge through her storyworks, which are shaped by her profound relationship with the land and guided by strong female role models in her community.
Stenhouse’s artistic expression harmoniously combines traditional techniques and knowledge with an assortment of contemporary weaving styles. Her practice is anchored in sustainability; and she only takes what is necessary and respects the wisdom of her elders.
This exhibition presents a cross-section of her weaving and textile practice, revealing step-by-step elements of her process. Emma will continue to add to the exhibition as she immerses in ATW. The exhibition will evolve alongside her practice as she discovers new avenues for exploration and learns new techniques with the weavers.
