Weaver

Saffron Gordon began weaving at the Australian Tapestry Workshop in 2021 as a recipient of the Bailieu Myer Scholarship Award. She holds a Diploma of Art & Design (Studio Textiles) from RMIT, with a major in Tapestry & minor in Experimental Textiles.

In her personal practice she explores hand made textile techniques including spinning, crochet and the use of natural dyes. In 2025 complete a course in weaving on a warp weighted loom in Norway.

During her time at the ATW Saffron has worked on major commissions including Old Media by Emma Biggs & Matthew Collings, Wecome to Country by Maree Clarke & Mitch Mahoney, and Salt Creep with Fence #2 by Phillip Hunter. Individual works include the award winning 2025 Tapestry Design Prize for Architects Camilla (Longing) designed by Troy Emery & Cox Architecture and Refraction index (May 1986) by Izabela Pluta. She wove alongside Ema Shin on her 2026 Sydney Biennial work Hearts of Absent Women (Tree of Family).

Saffron’s two favourite ATW tapestries are Kimberley Under the Stars designed by Trevor Nickolls in 2008 and Ilpili designed by Pepai Jangala Carrol in 2021.
