Join artist Emma Stenhouse for a hands-on, sensory weaving workshop using native grasses, inspired by the traditional coil weaving practices of Ngarrindjeri women. Through her ongoing connection to culture, Emma shares both traditional knowledge and contemporary approaches to this deeply meaningful craft.
In this guided session, you’ll create your own woven piece while learning the fundamentals of coil weaving. The workshop fosters a welcoming and respectful space for sharing stories, listening, and connecting with each other and with culture.
You’ll work with Lomandra longifolia, harvested from Emma’s own garden, and gain insight into the preparation of native plant fibres, including harvesting, drying and soaking techniques. Along the way, you’ll explore the significance of native grasses and sedges traditionally used in weaving practices, endemic to waterways and dry climates.
Resources and reference materials will be available throughout the session to support your learning and inspire further exploration.
Participants are welcome to bring their own weaving materials. Please ensure they are fresh. Note that some fibres may require soaking and may not be ready for immediate use during the workshop.
As a multifaceted creative, Emma explores diverse art practices influenced by her journey. Each art piece is braided with learning, an enriching exchange between artist and viewer, a continuation of culture and a platform for cross-cultural exchange.
