HRH The Prince of Wales visits the ATW

06-11-2012

The Australian Tapestry Workshop was honoured to be one of the few venues in Victoria included in the itinerary of HRH The Prince of Wales. His Royal Highness visited Australia as a personal representative of Her Majesty The Queen during the Diamond Jubilee year, which marks The Queen’s 60 years as the monarch.

We were delighted to have this opportunity to introduce His Royal Highness to the Workshop, including the Embassy Tapestry program, recent commissions for Northern Hospital and Warrnambool Base Hospital, and our high-quality Australian wool. A highlight of the visit was an exhibition and workshop by students from Coolaroo South Primary School. These students spent four days during the previous week working with arts educators from the Prince's School of Traditional Arts (PSTA) in London, artist Nusra Latif Qureshi and educators from the Royal Botanic Gardens.

These workshops will provide inspiration to Ms Qureshi as she designs a tapestry in celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and in recognition of the visit to Australia of TRH The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. This tapestry will be woven over the coming months by ATW artist-weavers.

We are grateful to our partners in this project: Nusra Latif Qureshi; Amber Khokhar and Daniel Docherty (PSTA); Kylie Regester, Christine Joy and the staff & volunteers at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne; the wonderful students and teachers at Coolaroo South Primary School; and the Victorian College of the Arts and filmmaker Gregory Erdstein. This project would not have been possible without the support of Arts Victoria, in particular Michael Nation.

In addition to funding from Arts Victoria, this project is supported by the Tapestry Foundation of Australia, which has chosen it as the first project to be designated funds from the ‘Give an Inch’ campaign. This campaign, launched last May, serves to support public projects at the Australian Tapestry Workshop.

Look for more information in upcoming eNewsletters and on our website, and follow all the latest at the Workshop via Facebook and Twitter.
