Work in progress

‘GIVE AN INCH’

Did you know that a tapestry costs about $20 per square inch to produce?

Of course, this varies as to complexity of design and many other factors, but this figure represents average costs. We need your support in order to continue to produce the finest works and promote the art of contemporary tapestry worldwide.

Why does it cost so much?

  • There is an extensive planning process. Before weaving starts, the weavers consult with the designing artist to finalise the design, and then spend many hours preparing the loom, working on interpretive samples, and transferring the design.
  • Weaving is labour-intensive. Every tapestry is made by hand, using the traditional Gobelins technique dating to mid-15th-century Europe. A large tapestry may take months to weave, even by a team of weavers.
  • Every project involves teamwork. In addition to the weavers, our specialist dyer is an indispensible member of the team, the production manager monitors progress, and the administrative staff ensures the financial and outreach aspects of the project are in hand.

But the tapestry produced at the end of this long process is worth it!

Please join the ‘GIVE AN INCH’ Campaign and support the production of innovative works of art destined for public collections.
