Finalists shortlisted for the Kate Derum Award

Director of the Australian Tapestry Workshop, Antonia Syme is pleased to announce that 43 works have been shortlisted for the 2011 Kate Derum Award. These works will be showcased in a four-week exhibition at the Workshop from October 21.
Created in honour of Kate Derum, former Deputy Director of the Australian Tapestry Workshop who passed away in 2008, the Kate Derum Award for small tapestries is open to all professional and international tapestry artists.
Featured on the finalists' list are some of the world's most accomplished tapestry artists including Tim Gresham (AUS), Inyul Heo (KOREA), Fiona Hutchinson (UK), Valerie Kirk (AUS), Michael F. Rhode (USA) and Cheryl Thornton (AUS).
Antonia noted that of the 63 entries received for this year's Award, 43 artists' works were selected as finalists with 17 coming from Australia and 26 from overseas.
"It is great to see so many high quality submissions from emerging and well known artists both in Australia and internationally, and the exhibition promises to showcase the current practice of contemporary tapestry around the world," says Antonia.
The Award features a non-acquisitive award of $5,000 for the winner and a non-acquisitive award of $1,000 for emerging artists who have been practicing for less than five years.
The judges for this year's Award are Professor Kay Lawrence AM, Professor of Visual Art, University of South Australia and a member of the Australian Tapestry Workshop's Board and Jason Smith, Director of Heide Museum of Modern Art. They will announce the winners on October 20, 2011.
The exhibition of Kate Derum Award finalists will be on display at the Australian Tapestry Workshop from October 21 to November 18, 2011.
